  • Post-doc in Societal Resilience

    Tecnun, the Engineering School of the University of Navarra seeks to fill a one year full-time, post-doc position of Industrial management department, to begin between September 2020 and January 2021. Depending on performance and mutual interests, the contract may be extended to a second year.

    Candidate will work in the ENGAGE european research project funded by H2020 program within the topic DRS01: Human factors, and social, societal, and organisational aspects for disaster-resilient societies. The mission of the ENGAGE project is to provide novel knowledge and impacful solutions for exploiting Europe´s hidden and unused resource: its inherent resilience. In order to achieve that, the project will provide knowledge and solutions supporting the engagement of citizens, communities and authorities in a “whole-of-society” approach to capitalize on the knowledge, capabilities and social capital existing at all levels of society to improve resilience. ENGAGE will tap into these resources and bridge the gap between societies’ inherent resilience and the planned, formal approaches to preventing and managing disasters. Candidates should do rigorous research within the context of the project that would lead to publish excellent papers in highly indexed journals. Candidate will need to show leadership and rigor when developing the research project.

     

    Skills and qualifications required

    • Candidates will be expected to hold a relevant doctoral level research degree, and hold a distinguished academic record including internationally excellent research, demonstrating appropriate markers of academic recognition.

    • Candidates will be expected to lead the project execution and perform proactively in the development of project outcomes and to show the capacity to publish excellent papers in highly indexed journals. 

    • Candidates will be expected to have a research background in crisis management, disaster management, resilience development, societal resilience, awareness, and basic knowledge on cyber resilience.

    • Interest in the identity and mission of the University of Navarra.

  • PhD student position at TECNUN, the School of Engineering of the University of Navarra

    About the position

    We are recruiting a PhD student to carry out research within the context of a European project related to Societal Resilience in the faculty of Engineering in the Industrial management department for a period of four years.

    Natural and man-made disasters remind us how the ability of societies to adapt and prosper depends on the collective action of the whole society. But the significant role of citizens and organisations can play at the grassroots level has been overlooked in research. This research will turn this around, showing how individuals and local practices can be combined effectively with planned preparedness and response, practitioners and technology. To achieve this goal this research will aim to define how societal resilience can be developed based on the contextual aspects such as socio-economic conditions, digital literacy, culture, gender, social capital, civil literacy, trust and diversity.

    Main duties and responsibilites

    The PhD candidate will have the main responsibility of carrying out the research to develop its dissertation with the support of relevant publications in highly indexed journals. Together with this research, the candidate will be expected to have an active role in the execution of the European project. Finally, the candidate will show the willingness to take part in the different activities organized within the department as well as mandatory duties established in the PhD student agreements.

     

    Qualification requirements

    • A solid academic background with a master’s degree in Engineering or Business Administration. This year candidates who are in the closing stages of their master’s degree can also apply.
    • Strong writing skills for research paper.
    • Good knowledge of English, both written and oral, is required.

     

    Personal characteristics

    The position places great demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal -oriented work with a critical attitude. The Faculty is seeking candidates with good communication skills for communicating both with the practitioners of the research, research partners and PhD colleagues. Further, relevant practical experience, personal qualities, suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.
